EW Cover: ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson

Jamie Dornan was in his pajamas, and anxious. It was 1:30 a.m. London time, and the 31-year old actor was watching reruns of Storage Wars and praying for the phone to ring. “I was sort of pretending I wasn’t waiting, but the phone was in my hand, halfway to my ear,” Dornan says in throaty Irish brogue. He had just flown back from Los Angeles, where he had auditioned for the role of the world’s hottest control freak, Christian Grey, in Fifty Shades of Grey. Landing this part would propel him to instant stardom, and so, with his pregnant wife, actress Amelia Warner, snoozing upstairs, Dornan tried to focus on the show. Minutes later, the film’s director, Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy), phoned to tell the former Calvin Klein model that he was about to become the object of millions of women’s fantasies. “There was a slight fear,” Dornan says now, his wiry frame huddled on a couch in a Los Angeles photo studio. “But beyond anything else, I was really f—ing excited.”

This weeks’s Entertainment Weekly cover story features the first exclusive interviews with the two stars of the new film based on Fifty Shades of Grey, the publishing phenomenon from British author E L James — about the seduction of virginal college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) by a beautiful billionaire with a penchant for sadomasochism (Dornan) — that has sold 90 million copies worldwide and ignited the libidos of a generation of women.

The stars open up about what drew them to the roles, the pressures behind getting the roles right for the fans, and how they feel about baring it all. For Johnson, 24, the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, it meant seriously working out for the first time in her life. “Obviously, I want to look good naked,” the newly brunette actress tells EW. “I totally understand now why people exercise, because it kind of f—ing feels awesome.”

Dornan, who spent his early days as a model frequently undressing for the camera, isn’t the least bit anxious about the graphic sex scenes he and Johnson are about to film. “I’m a fairly worldly guy,” says Dornan. “I grew up in a very liberal place. I’m not saying we had a playroom, but I’m not shocked by [the sex in the book]. It’s essential to tell the story. I can’t believe films that don’t invoke the sexual side of it. So it works for me.”

Everything also seems to be working now, too, for the studio behind the film, Universal Pictures and its indie subsidiary Focus Features, which purchased the rights to James’ trilogy back in March 2012. The studio experienced some initial bumps along the way, particularly with the initial casting (and subsequent departure) of Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) as Christian Grey. The film, which begins production in Vancouver on Dec. 2, was originally set for release this August, but has now been pushed to Valentine’s Day weekend 2015.

50 Shades of Grey Updates: Jamie Dornan cast as new Christian Grey

Anastasia Steele has finally met her match. Irish actor Jamie Dornan is in final talks to play the billionarie BDSM enthusiast Christian Grey in the adaptation of EL James’ best-seller Fifty Shades of Grey. Focus/Universal, declined to confirm, but an inside source says the deal is in its final stages. The studio, to say nothing of the trilogy’s ardent fans, was thrown into overdrive when the original Christian, Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam, abruptly bowed out of the production two weeks ago. The casting of 31-year-old Dornan alongside Dakota Johnson’s Anastasia will hopefully steady director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s production that is slated to begin shooting mid-November.

50 Shades of Grey Updates: Dakota Is In Hunt for New Christian Grey Cast!

Anastasia Steele, the weak-in-the-knees innocent at the heart of EL James’ 50 Shades of Grey, is still searching for her dark prince. Focus has been scrambling to replace Charlie Hunnam after he recently abandoned the role in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s adaptation. Last night at the 2013 Hollywood Film Awards, 50 Shades producer Michael DeLuca  told E! News that 24-year-old Johnson, who remains committed to the role of Ana, was “our rock.”  DeLuca went on to say that “she’s helping us look through the candidates to see which chemistry kind of our captures our attention.”

Joining the likes of Alexander Skarsgard on the short list of rumored replacements is British actor (and former Calvin Klein underwear model) Jamie Dornan. The 31-year-old played Sheriff Graham in the ABC series Once Upon a Time, and made his film debut alongside Kirsten Dunst in 2006′s Marie Antoinette. (But again, do check out his fine work in the Calvin Klein ads.)

A new name added to the rumor mill is Tony-nominated American actor Billy Magnussen. The 28-year-old actor, whose boyish face As the World Turns fans know well, is having a helluva year. In another high-profile replacement, Magnussen stepped in for Jake Gyllenhaal in the upcoming movie musical Into the Woods. A recent report in THR quoted sources saying that the two actors read opposite Johnson for the director on Friday. Focus did not return a request for comment.

Dakota Johnson Buys $3,000 Worth of Orlane Skin Care With Mom Melanie Griffith

Dakota Johnson, who was recently named the lead role as Anastasia Steele in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey film, was just spotted at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City with mom Melanie Griffith, and seemed to be on the hunt for some posh skin care solutions.

The pretty pair spent considerable time in the cosmetics department and ended up splurging big time at the Orlane Paris counter—$3,000, to be exact!

Whoa!

While most of us could never afford to drop that kind of moola on a few jars of moisturizer, it’s clearly just a drop in the bucket for this pretty pair.

Wondering what the mother-daughter duo took home with them?

Their luxurious beauty loot included plenty of pricey products including the hydrating serum, super moisturizing light cream and Vivifying cleanser, just to name a few.

Ah-mazing!

One thing’s for sure, the young star’s skin is going to look better than ever on the big screen.

And all dollar signs aside, we still think it’s totally adorable that they share a close bond and we’re betting that the beautiful 23-year-old is learning lots from her successful (and stylish!) mother right about now.

‘Fifty Shades’ Of Kaling: Mindy Approves Of Dakota Johnson Casting

Dakota Johnson is getting a pretty high-profile co-sign from Mindy Kaling. The casting of the former “Ben & Kate” star in the big-screen adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey” may have initially led fans of the E.L. James trilogy to scratch their heads, but Mindy is hardly surprised by it.

She’s got a lot of love for Dakota, who used to share Tuesday nights with “The Mindy Project” star on Fox.

“Dakota is another one where it’s like, she’s really funny and very beautiful, so she was the kind of person where it’s like sometimes you put a timer on someone and you’re like ‘Dakota’s going—[it’s] to be a certain amount of time before she becomes huge,'” she said, adding, “Cause she’s just very dry and funny, beautiful in a way that’s not, like, boring. She’s gonna be great.”

And if you’re wondering if Mindy’s small-screen alter-ego—the rom-com loving Dr. Lahiri—is excited for the flick, she weighs in. “I am 100 percent sure Mindy Lahiri would go to the Ziegfeld [Theater] or wherever it is and see the premiere,” she said.

We also have a feeling Mindy wouldn’t mind making Dakota’s hunky leading man, Charlie Hunnam, her latest conquest. We can’t blame her.
